• Diet How many kilos can you lose weight a week without risking your health?

The good (and bad) thing about Google's time is that you can intuit that, if you put diet/lose weight/Jennifer Lopez together in the same sentence, you have an almost guaranteed success. And if, in addition, you add accelerate/metabolism, the chances of the topic being widely read increase even more.

In other words, if we tell you that Jennifer Lopez has resorted to the Accelerated Metabolism Diet (also known by its acronym, CMA) to lose weight and lose volume, the thing promises...

And, speaking of promising, it is assumed that with this eating plan, designed by the American nutritionist Haylie Pomroy, you can lose up to eight kilos in 28 days and, what is even more hopeful, accelerate the functioning of our metabolic system.

It sounds fantastic, but what does nutritionist María Amaro think of the matter? "The first thing I have to say is that if I were a person who wanted to lose weight and, instead of going to a specialist, I Googled what diet to do to lose weight, I would go crazy. Why? Because in some places they tell me to eat every 14 hours; in others, to take more protein; in others, more vegetables and legumes; in others, don't try the chickpeas... There's no one to make any difference!"

Losing eight kilos in 28 days is, without a doubt, a great publicity claim. "Although the slogan is very good, we should look further and realize that eight kilos in four weeks is a lot of kilos and it doesn't seem like a very healthy plan."

Amaro continues to break down Pomroy's method. "The idea is to lose weight by doing every day what it says on the corresponding page of Pomroy's book, entitled 'The Accelerated Metabolism Diet. The last diet you'll ever do', as if you were following an instruction manual to assemble a piece of furniture, thus assuming that everyone who reads it has the same needs: the same age, the same weight, the same physical condition, the same lifestyle. In other words, the amounts of daily food that are proposed are the same for a 35-year-old man who weighs 100 kilos and leads a sedentary life as for a 50-year-old woman who has just entered menopause."

The proposal is to weigh, every day, everything she eats: "Surely, Jennifer Lopez not only has time to think about the 120 grams of meat or the cups of cereal that she has to drink that day, but, probably, not even she will do it. But I think that, for a person with a 'normal' life, it's quite difficult to find time to think about everything they eat."

María Amaro makes an important point. "To analyze the value of this diet, it is essential to define what basal metabolism is. Well, basal metabolism, which can also be called basal metabolic rate, refers to the energy expenditure – the minimum daily kilocaries – that the body needs to maintain its vital functions, which represents between 50 and 70% of total energy expenditure."

This information makes it quite clear to us which is the most effective tool to speed up metabolism. "To speed up the metabolism and, therefore, boost calorie burning, what you need to do is exercise more, something that is also proposed in this book through a combination of cardio, yoga and relaxation sessions that increases in intensity as the phases progress."

What doesn't work, as Haylie Pomroy also proposes, is "to go around with restrictions ofsome basic nutrients for our body or, on the contrary, with excessive doses of others, such as proteins".

"Losing weight," this nutritionist reminds us, "is a very serious thing. You can't follow a diet as if it were instructions for assembling a piece of furniture. Anyone who wants to lose weight must take into account, not only the kilos they want to lose, but also their age, their lifestyle, their health status... As I always say, we only have one body and it comes with no spares. Let's not jeopardize him!"
