Experts: "The epidemic is happening ahead of schedule"

Kazuhiro Tateda, a professor at Toho University who is familiar with infectious diseases, commented on the influenza epidemic situation, saying, "There is an increasing trend nationwide, and the number of areas that have exceeded or approached the warning level is increasing. In some areas, such as Ehime Prefecture, the number of patients reported was about the same as in previous years, and it has become clear that the epidemic is occurring ahead of schedule. Also, as in a normal season, there is a possibility that there will be more cases from here to the beginning of the year, which will create a big wave, so we need to be more careful and catch the signs of an increase in patients in the future."

On the other hand, regarding the new coronavirus, "There has been a downward trend for eight consecutive weeks, and the spread of infection has calmed down considerably, but there is a risk that it will spread again because the number of people with weakened immunity will increase a few months after infection, so it will coincide with the cold winter season."

Regarding future precautions, he said, "It is important to continue infection control measures such as masks, hand sanitizer, and thorough ventilation to prevent the spread of infection, and if you have symptoms like a cold, it is important to suspect the possibility of influenza or corona, refrain from going out as much as possible, and visit a medical institution as soon as possible. If you want to get the flu vaccine, please get vaccinated as soon as possible."
