A recurring theme among the costumes is that no one has dressed in the classic dark Halloween attire, with cobwebs and blood. Despite this, the music year has been characterized by the dark, according to Ayan Jamal.
"Artists have really entered a demonic time," says Ayan Jamal, a cultural journalist.
Want to break expectations
Jamal says that artists such as Sam Smith, Doja Cat, Olivia Rodrigo and SZA have all made songs and music videos that are characterized by the dark, with demonic elements.
Ayan Jamal believes that, for example, Doja Cat has chosen the demonic to break free from a pop context.
"She has tried to separate herself from the classic pop act and that has not been appreciated, especially not from the American side," she says, pointing out that several artists who have become famous quickly also go into something rebellious.
"We've seen Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus do it. Even though Doja Cat didn't become famous as a child, maybe this is her attempt to break with that pop-like expectation, she says.
"2023 is the year of darkness"
In the film world, there is a renaissance for horror films and thrillers, says Ayan Jamal. Among other things, "Scream 6" and a remake of "The Exorcist" premiered during the year and the Guldbagge Awards audience award went to the horror film "Canceled".
