Prominent parents, especially in the USA, like to attract attention with unusual names for their offspring. Rapper Jay-Z has now told how his daughter came to be called Blue Ivy.

"It should be called Brooklyn," the 53-year-old said on CBS Mornings. On the ultrasound, however, Blue Ivy was so "super tiny" that he and his wife, pop star Beyoncé, always named their unborn first child Blueberry, on German blueberry. It was like a nickname. "For nine months we said, 'Look at the little blueberry,' so it became natural. Then we just left out the 'berry' and called her Blue." However, he left open how they were inspired to write the second part of the name.

The rapper, whose real name is Shawn Carter and who became internationally successful with songs such as "Empire State of Mind" and "Crazy in Love", has been married to Beyoncé ("Break My Soul") since 2008. Blue Ivy was born in 2012, twins Rumi and Sir were born in 2017.
