A drunken man steered his car into a motorway crash barrier near Weimar, fled on foot – and came back shortly afterwards to get a beer from the car. He was observed by witnesses, as the police in Thuringia announced.

He then hid in a bush in an adjacent field, but was quickly found by the fire brigade. A breath alcohol test carried out after the accident on Saturday evening resulted in just under 2.3 per thousand, it said.

Due to clean-up work, the Autobahn 4 in the direction of Dresden near Nohra (Weimarer Land) remained closed for two and a half hours. Traffic has been diverted. The 39-year-old from Poland is now facing charges of drunk driving.
