Shangrao, Jiangxi, 9 Sep (ZXS) -- The safety construction project of Poyang Lake, Zhuhu, Yellow Lake, and Fangzhou Xietang flood storage and detention areas officially started on 27 September, marking that the four state-level flood storage and detention areas around Poyang Lake, including Kangshan, Zhuhu, Yellow Lake, and Fangzhou Xietang, which jointly undertake the task of distributing 27.25 billion cubic meters of excess flood water in the Yangtze River, have all started construction.

It is understood that the project is one of the 150 major water conservancy projects identified by China's State Council, and is listed as a major water conservancy project to be promoted this year, with a total investment of about 16.09 billion yuan and a total construction period of 36 months.

The Jiangxi Provincial Water Resources Department said that previously, the Poyang Lake Zhuhu, Yellow Lake and Fangzhou Xietang flood storage and detention areas were general flood storage and detention areas, and safety facilities and flood entry and retreat facilities were aging, and the construction of safety facilities in flood storage and detention areas must be strengthened. After the completion of the project, it will further enhance the flood control capacity of Poyang Lake District and both sides of the Yangtze River, promote harmonious coexistence between man and nature, and coordinated economic and social development.

Poyang Lake, China's largest freshwater lake, is an internationally important wetland and an important reservoir lake in the main stream of the Yangtze River, which plays a huge role in the Yangtze River Basin of China and other special ecological functions such as flood control and biodiversity protection, and is one of the top ten ecological function reserves in China and one of the globally important ecological regions designated by the World Wide Fund for Nature.
