Being humble may help you go far in life. Certainly not in the entertainment industry. George Clooney is not humble, James Cameron is not humble, Meryl Streep is not humble. We know the latter because she has long taken the tributes and award nominations as what in her case they are: I am the best and I deserve this and more. That's why for the third season of Only Murder in the Building to begin with her playing an actress yet to be discovered is doubly funny: the series knows that Meryl is well discovered, Meryl knows that the series knows, etc, etc.

Maybe taking everything seriously helps you go far in life. Certainly not in a TV comedy. Rockefeller Plaza was not taken seriously, The Golden Girls was not taken seriously, and Only murders in the building is not taken seriously. The series, which can be seen in Spain on Disney +, knows that realism is not its thing. No one has asked him, besides. His crazy New York Cluedo is both: a game and a human zoo. Only murders in the building knows what series it is and, above all, it knows how to be. He is well aware that his premise, halfway between A Crime Has Been Written and Veronica Mars, only stands from total imposture. Two of its protagonists are showbusiness people and in its third season everything revolves around a theatrical production that, in another attack of non-humility, already baited us at the end of the second.

Just murders in the building is, never better said, a huge show.

But back to Meryl. Streep does very little television and the jobs she chooses in that medium do not give clues about what moves her to choose them. Of course: choose the one you choose, that project will be The Chosen One. This is how his stake in the second (and failed) season of Big Little Lies was sold. Evidently, Only Murders in the Building has actively promoted the signing of Streep. However, he has also considered it as something completely logical. Who better than her to play Loretta, the gifted actress who doesn't find her big break until she's 70? Another (more humble) series would not dare to verbalize this, but I have no doubt that in meetings with Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez, the three protagonists and executive producers of Only Murders in the Building, the words "Meryl Streep" were pronounced naturally.

There are very few series right now capable of withstanding the overwhelming presence of an icon like her. For better and for worse, Meryl Streep engulfs the scenes. She is almost always an inside joke, a meta-comment, an irony. That's why it's perfect for the Martin, Short and Gomez series. Although it comes out quite little. It is evident that the shooting schedules of Fictions-Con-Meryl (I propose that this be an independent genre) are structured around their availability and preferences. In return the best living actress gives you boasts like that display of different accents (again: meta-joke), proof that she sings better than in Mamma Mia and the insinuation that we will see her rolling up with Martin Short. Only murders in the building is the series in which that happens and it does not attract our attention. The pride of this superb series consists in being so light and inconsequential. Its new installment opens with an episode that contains a choral scene at the level of that of The Avengers: Endgame. The timing would only be more perfect if Meryl Streep's character made a comment like the one in my previous sentence.
