After a penguin was found in the Rostock Zoo on Tuesday morning, the criminal investigation department has taken up the investigation. First of all, it will be determined on suspicion of trespassing, a police spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

"The first search for clues is over. The penguin has massive injuries to his neck. There must be an external influence.« According to media reports, the animal was decapitated. The police could not confirm this. "You can't talk about that."

What specifically led to the death of the animal is now to be clarified by an autopsy. For this purpose, the penguin was brought to the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Office for Agriculture, Food Safety and Fisheries. "They'll take a closer look at it now, then we can only say what was the cause."

Other animals at the zoo in Rostock have not been injured, according to initial information. A zookeeper had found the lifeless body in the penguin enclosure.
