Governor Tamaki of Okinawa Prefecture has indicated that he intends to attend the UN Human Rights Council next month. It is expected to convey the prefectural government's views on the plan to relocate the U.S. Army's Futenma Air Base to Henoko, Nago City.

Governor Tamaki of Okinawa Prefecture told reporters at the prefectural government office on May 15, "I would like to go to the United Nations to speak in order to firmly convey Okinawa's awareness in the international arena," and announced his intention to attend the United Nations Human Rights Council meeting to be held in Geneva, Switzerland next month.

At the United Nations Human Rights Council, Governor Tamaki appealed to the current situation of the excessive base burden in Okinawa, communicated the views of the prefecture opposing the government's plan to relocate the U.S. Army's Futenma Air Base to Henoko, Nago City, and the security environment surrounding the Japan is becoming increasingly severe, including issues surrounding Taiwan. It is expected to convey that the prefecture has established a new department and is conducting its own dialogue with related countries, including China.

At the United Nations Human Rights Council, former Governor Onaga attended the meeting in Heisei 27 and gave a speech stating that "the right to self-determination and human rights of the Okinawan people are being neglected," and appealed to international public opinion against the relocation plan.
