Five months after the spectacular attack on a money transporter near Gützkow, the police have given details of the investigation – and asked for help from Lower Saxony. In the armed robbery at the beginning of March at a prepared ramp of the Autobahn 20, a total of 3.1 million euros were captured, as the police in Neubrandenburg announced.

One of the suspects is already in custody for another offense. He had been caught with other accomplices in Lower Saxony a few weeks after the robbery. The police had also seized a submachine gun.

Suspects are said to have disguised themselves as fitters

The robbers had picked up the money transporter at the A20 Gützkow ramp when it was on its way from Greifswald to Neubrandenburg to bring money to the Bundesbank. They stopped the security vehicle with the help of cars and concrete blocks. Two perpetrators are said to have fired warning shots at the vehicle with submachine guns, sprayed the windshield with paint and forcibly opened the vehicle from behind.

The two guards stayed in the vehicle until the robbers disappeared and then got out. No one was injured. One of the victims, however, is still unable to work.

The robbers set fire to an escape van several kilometers away at a forest near Musstin, where they got into a third, previously unknown car to escape. In the case of the burned-out escape Mercedes, burnt-out and opened cash cassettes were also found.

Since then, two masked perpetrators who were seen at the scene have been sought, as well as one or two helpers. It was one of the worst raids of its kind in the Northeast since 1990.

The police are hoping for clues from landlords in Lower Saxony, where the suspects are said to have rented in March as fitters. In addition, a connection with a similar money transporter robbery in January near Potsdam is being examined.
