American photographer Bryan Randall, longtime partner of actress Sandra Bullock, has died. He died on Saturday after a three-year battle with ALS, his family said in a statement on Monday.

He had decided "early" to keep his illness a secret, numerous US media quoted from the family's statement. Randall was 57 years old. The incurable muscle and nerve disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) leads to destroyed nerves and progressive muscle paralysis.

Oscar-winning actress Bullock and Randall met in January 2015 while photographing their adopted son Louis' birthday party, according to People.com. That year, Bullock adopted her second child, Laila, who was two years old at the time. Randall brought a daughter into the relationship.

In December 2021, Bullock said on the Facebook talk show "Red Table Talk" that she had found the "love of her life." I don't need a piece of paper to be a devoted partner and mother," Bullock continued.

The now 59-year-old actress had become known with films such as "Speed" and "While You Were Sleeping" and had received the Oscar in 2010 for "Blind Side". Between 2005 and 2010, she was married to TV presenter Jesse James.

Break from work since 2022

Last year, Bullock had declared that she would pause her acting career for the time being. She wanted to be with her family "24/7," she said in an interview with "Entertainment Tonight" at the time.

"When I work, I take my job very seriously," Bullock said. Her job is "24/7" – now she wants to spend this time with her family. She could not say how long she would take a break.

During this time, she plans to fulfill every wish of her children and to work through her "social calendar". There was no question of her partner's illness at that time.
