In an accident at work on the premises of a waste disposal and recycling company in Upper Bavaria, three men drowned in a sewer system. One of the three workers had worked in Weyarn (district of Miesbach) in a water-filled manhole, police said. When his colleagues could no longer contact him, the two men climbed into the shaft to help. After that, there were no more signs of life from the three.

As a result, several volunteer fire brigades from the area, the rescue service, a rescue helicopter, water rescue and several police patrols drove to the company, police said. Divers had searched for the three missing, but could not find them because of the high water level in the canal system.

Crisis intervention team in action

It was only after firefighters lowered the water level in the sewer system that the three men, aged 20, 27 and 28, were found dead. The Miesbach Criminal Investigation Department and the Munich II Public Prosecutor's Office investigated the cause at the scene of the accident. Why the men worked on the manhole, a police spokesman could not say.

The relatives of the three men, all of whom come from communities in the region, according to police, were notified during the ongoing operation. They were cared for by a crisis intervention team and trained staff from the Upper Bavaria South Police Headquarters.
