Scandal at the volunteer fire brigade in Leonberg in Baden-Württemberg: Five firefighters are suspected of having shouted right-wing extremist slogans over the loudspeaker of a vehicle on Saturday night.

According to police, several residents heard the shouting and reported the incident. The men are said to be between 23 and 36 years old. The 25-year-old driver was then found to have an alcohol concentration in the blood of 0.8 per thousand. It is still unclear whether the other four chanters were also drunk. The firefighters are now being investigated on suspicion of incitement.

Lord Mayor distances himself

The mayor of the city of Leonberg, Martin Georg Cohn (SPD), was shocked by the incident. "On behalf of the city of Leonberg, but also personally, I distance myself in no uncertain terms from this right-wing extremist act," it said in a statement. Equality, respect and esteem for all people are values that our society needs, especially in the current difficult times. "With this incident, these values have been trampled underfoot," said the mayor. The five men had been suspended from duty.
