She was a singer, actress, style icon – in 1968, Jane Birkin was abruptly hit with the sexually explicit song "Je t'aime... moi non plus" is world-famous, for moaning together with her then husband, the singer Serge Gainsbourg. The song caused a scandal, got on the index in many countries and makes the two one of the most recognizable couples of the 70s.

Now Jane Birkin was found dead in her Parier apartment on Sunday. Before that, Parisian women also commemorated Birkin, who was born in London, as a mediator between cultures.

»She will be missed by France. Because she was an Englishwoman who was loved by the French, that's really very important.«

»Jane embodied exactly what I love. This mix of England and France, with the double perspective, the chic, that perfect accent.«

She was discovered as an actress with Michelangelo Antonioni's "Blow Up" and alongside Romy Schneider and Alain Delon in "The Swimming Pool". Later, she often played the scooters of the naïve, male-dependent woman. Their daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg also became an actress, and they presented a joint film in Cannes two years ago.

As a model, she became groundbreaking with her simple look. In 1984, the luxury fashion house Hermès named a bag after her, which is still highly sought after today. Birkin was also politically active, fighting for the rights of women and the LGBTQ community. In recent years, she has suffered from leukemia and a stroke and has had to cancel concerts again and again. Jane Birkin was 76 years old.
