Zhongxin Wanghai, July 7 (Reporter Chen Jing) Presbyopia, medically called "presbyopia", is due to age, the lens gradually hardens, the elasticity weakens and the eye adjustment function declines, just like white hair naturally occurs. Professor Lu Yi of the Affiliated Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital of Fudan University told reporters on the 3rd that presbyopia is not an untreatable eye disease, as long as you choose a scientific and appropriate diagnosis and treatment method, you can regain the whole process of vision, improve visual quality, and enhance your happiness in life.

The reporter learned on the same day that the "2023 China Presbyopia Population Insight Report" (hereinafter referred to as the report) jointly compiled by authoritative ophthalmologists has just been released. According to this, 35.56% of China's population over 9 years old have presbyopia problems, reaching 3 million. Middle-aged people in this age group are in the "golden period" of career development and are the mainstay of family and society. Presbyopia will directly affect personal development confidence, if the patient has myopia problems, more need to replace multiple pairs of glasses back and forth, quality of life plummets.

Professor Lu Yi said in an interview with reporters that as a vision problem that people will inevitably appear after entering middle and old age, presbyopia usually appears around the age of 38, the peak is between 42 and 44 years old, and the incidence of presbyopia in people over 52 years old is close to 100%; Common symptoms are difficulty seeing near objects, eye fatigue, and need for strong lighting. Although there are other pathogenic factors such as genetics, drugs, and eye habits, the decline in lens regulation caused by aging is still the main cause of presbyopia. It is understood that with the advent of the digital age, the scene of middle-aged and elderly people using eyes is constantly changing, and it is not uncommon for the intensity of eyes to increase and excessive use of electronic products, which further accelerates the occurrence of visual problems.

In order to fully understand the behavioral mechanisms behind the data, the report analyzes the eye habits of middle-aged and elderly people in China. The report pointed out that with the popularization of electronic products in middle-aged and elderly groups, people over 40 years old use mobile phones and computers for a long time, and the proportion of people with near vision problems is as high as 92%. In addition to visual health problems, presbyopia problems can continue to affect work, life and mood, and the younger you are and the higher your education, the greater the impact. Most young patients do not want to be considered "aging", which not only affects the rhythm and efficiency of dealing with things, but even leads to sadness, visual anxiety and other bad psychology.

It is understood that the compilation of the report has received the attention and support of many experts, including Professor Yao Ke, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Professor Zhao Jialiang of Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Professor Lu Yi of Fudan University Affiliated Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital, Professor Chen Weirong of Sun Yat-sen University Zhongshan Eye Center, and Professor Bi Hongsheng of the Affiliated Eye Hospital of Shandong University of Chinese Medicine.

How to restore the ability of lens adjustment or improve visual quality with the help of external forces has become the key to correcting presbyopia. According to the report, due to insufficient public awareness of presbyopia, more than 65% of patients have not been corrected. Therefore, it is urgent to improve the health awareness of presbyopia and popularize scientific treatment.

The report pointed out that there are two ways to correct presbyopia clinically, which can be selected by patients according to their needs. According to reports, in the past, the most common thing was to wear reading glasses or contact lenses. However, there are often elderly people who buy a pair of reading flowers at the stall or use other people's reading glasses at will, which causes more problems. Professor Lu Yi bluntly said that reading glasses are difficult to meet the needs of middle-aged people who want to improve visual quality and enhance work and life efficiency, so patients have begun to pay attention to surgical methods.

According to reports, compared with corneal laser surgery, refractive lens replacement surgery is more recognized because of its long-term stability advantages, which can meet the needs of patients for lens removal and full vision. For example, by choosing to implant a full-vision trifocal intraocular lens that can achieve far, medium and near full vision, replace the natural lens that has lost its regulating force, re-establish high-definition excellent vision, and also solve multiple eye problems such as cataracts, farsightedness, and myopia in an integrated manner.

In the interview, many experts reminded the public: after the age of 35, they should do regular eye examinations, pay attention to eye health in advance, and once presbyopia problems are found, go to professional ophthalmic institutions for examination as soon as possible. With the joint efforts of experts, medical institutions and all sectors of society, more innovative achievements will benefit the presbyopia population. (End)
