Guangzhou, July 7 (Zhongxin Net) -- According to the Pearl River Conservancy Research Institute of the Pearl River Water Conservancy Commission (hereinafter referred to as the "Pearl River Science Institute") on the 3rd, the "Comprehensive Scientific Investigation of Resources, Environment and Biodiversity in the Xijiang Basin" (referred to as the "Xijiang Scientific Expedition") led by the Institute has basically completed the background investigation of the Xijiang Basin, and more than 3 species of fish and macrobenthic invertebrates, nearly 200 species of plankton, and nearly 500 species of aquatic vascular plants have been investigated in the important main tributaries of the Xijiang River.

According to the Pearl Science Institute, the four-month fishing ban in the Pearl River Basin officially ended on the 4st. After the start of fishing, the number of fish has become one of the most concerned issues for the public. Since the launch of the Xijiang scientific expedition in 1, the scientific expedition team has conducted a comprehensive and systematic scientific investigation of aquatic organisms in the headwaters of the Xijiang River, the main stream of the middle and lower reaches and important tributaries and estuaries.

According to reports, the Xijiang scientific expedition investigated more than 200 species of fish and macrobenthic invertebrates, nearly 500 species of plankton and nearly 200 species of aquatic vascular plants in the important main tributaries of the Xijiang River; In the estuary area, more than 100 species of fish, more than 400 species of plankton, nearly 100 species of macrobenthic invertebrates, and more than 150 Chinese white dolphins were identified. It is worth mentioning that the expedition team has discovered 8 new species of macrobenthic animals and fish, and 15 species are suspected new species.

The expedition team also conducted a systematic survey of rare and endangered species in the Xijiang River Basin. The survey found that the Chinese sturgeon, the national second-class protected animals red stingray, the flower eel and the dorsal mussel were not found in the investigation of the historical distribution of the Xijiang River Basin, which shows that the protection pressure of rare and endangered species is still very large.

In addition to the decline in the stock of rare and endangered species, the Xijiang scientific expedition also found 34 invasive alien species such as fish and macrobenthic invertebrates, covering the entire watershed. Among them, the occurrence rate of Fushou snail in the Guijiang River Basin reached 50%, and the occurrence rate of tilapia in the Guangxi and Guangdong river sections was as high as 80%, which seriously squeezed out the living space of indigenous species.

It is reported that after the start of fishing, the Xijiang scientific expedition will open the next stage of investigation and sampling and continue to explore the aquatic life world of Xijiang. (End)
