Maria Fahl Vikander is dead, the Gothenburg Post writes.

She studied at the Statens scenskola in Malmö during the years 1976-1979, where she was in the same class as, among others, Reine Brynolfsson and Philip Sandén.

Since then she has worked at the Gothenburg City Theater for over twenty years and also at the National Theater, Backa Theater and the Folk Theater in Gothenburg.

"It is with enormous sadness and pain that I write these words," writes her daughter Alicia Vikander on Facebook.

Played Astrid Lindgren

Maria Fahl Vikander was born in Lund in 1951, but grew up in Småland.

After high school, she moved to Gothenburg before she trained at the stage school in Malmö.

After graduating, she moved back to Gothenburg and began her career as an actor at the Gothenburg City Theatre, where she appeared in "Miss Julie" and "Romeo and Juliet".

Parallel to her years on the theater stage, she has appeared in various films, including "A December Dream" and "Prästen i paradiset".

In 2018, she played the older Astrid Lindgren in Pernille Fischer Christensen's biographical film "Young Astrid".

"Proudest daughter in the world"

Maria Fahl Vikander spent her last weeks in Portugal with her daughter Alicia Vikander and her family.

“Your talent to entertain, to express yourself – with such humor and wit – moves me to tears and makes me absolutely bubbling over with love.

I am truly the proudest daughter in the world, who has been lucky enough to have you as my mother," writes Alicia Vikander in the Facebook post.

When Alicia Vikander won an Oscar for best supporting actress in the film "The Danish Girl", Maria Fahl Vikander was in the gala audience.

- You sit on full tension and can never relax when your face is broadcast live during a four-hour gala.

But I never had a thought that Alicia would win, just the nomination was big enough, said Maria Fahl Vikander in an interview with SVT after the win.

Maria Fahl Vikander was 71 years old.
