The oldest person in Japan dies at the age of 111

Shigeru Nakamura, known as the oldest Japanese man, died on Tuesday at the age of 111 in a nursing home in Hiroshima Prefecture.



Nakamura was born on January 11, 1911 in Gensekikogen, a prefecture in western Japan, and was exposed to the after-effects of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 in the final stages of World War II, after he went to help clear rubble in the devastated city in the aftermath of the attack. According to Japan's Kyodo News Agency.

Nakamura became the oldest man in Japan after the previous title holder died at the age of 112 in Nara Prefecture on September 9 this year.

Now, the oldest man in Japan is Jisaburo Sonobe, 111, from Chiba Prefecture near Tokyo, while the oldest person in the country overall is Fusa Tatsumi, a 115-year-old woman in Osaka Prefecture, according to the health ministry.



According to the Guinness Book of Records, as of May this year, Venezuelan man Juan Vicente Perez is the oldest living man in the world at 113 years old.

Perez was born on May 27, 1909.
