Visitor break on Komodo: Indonesia wants to close its dragon island for a year. The island east of Bali, home to several thousand Komodo dragons, is scheduled to remain closed to tourists throughout the year 2020. This was announced by the government in Jakarta. This is justified by the protection of rare animals.

Komodo National Park: paradise in danger

There is already a national park on Komodo. Last week, an attempt was thwarted to bring 41 monitors out of the country. The animals become up to three meters long and more than 70 kilograms heavy.

Because of their dark appearance they are also called Komodo dragons. Altogether about 5000 monitors are at home on the Small Sund Islands. They have a reputation for being quite aggressive. Attacks on humans are rare.

Currently, about 10,000 visitors a month land on Komodo. During the closing time, new trees will be planted. In addition, the authorities want to significantly increase the price of admission to the national park. Instead of the equivalent of just over 9 euros, a ticket should soon cost 440 euros.
