Beijing, September 9 (Reporter Sun Zifa) Springer Nature, a world-renowned academic publishing institution, released information to the media on September 11, saying that it and the Computer Network Information Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences recently signed a letter of intent for cooperation in Beijing, and the two sides will jointly launch a white paper on China's open data, which is scheduled to be released in November 9.

The letter of intent aims to strengthen the cooperation between the two sides in the field of open data, including survey reports, academic conferences, training, exchanges and promotion.

Research data is a collection of documents that support the publication of a research project, research or results, including spreadsheets, documents, images, video or audio, and open data is an essential element of open science and the key to supporting research reproducibility.

For the seventh consecutive year, Springer Nature has jointly conducted an annual global survey with Digital Science and the Figshare Knowledge Base to understand the latest attitudes and experiences of researchers on open data, and to publish the annual State of Open Data Report.

According to the newly signed letter of intent for cooperation, Springer Nature and the Computer Network Information Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences will jointly produce and publish an open data white paper focusing on China this year, and Springer Nature will provide relevant survey data, consultation and guidance. The China Open Data White Paper 2023 will be released in November as part of the State of Open Data report.

In addition, the two companies plan to hold an annual roundtable discussion on open data and explore training collaborations on open data, as well as a collaboration to publish a peer-reviewed thematic collection for the Scientific Data Conference.

Dr. Niels Peter Thomas, President of Springer Nature Greater China and President of Global Books, said that the collaboration is based on the consensus of both parties to promote open data and open science, and also responds to the growing recognition and practice of open data by Chinese researchers.

Researcher Zhou Yuanchun, deputy director of the Computer Network Information Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that open science is becoming an important development model and global consensus, and open data is the core component of open science. It is believed that this cooperation can help more scientists understand and participate in open data practices, and jointly promote the development of global open science data cause.

According to reports, in 2022, in the open data global survey jointly conducted by Springer Nature and others, the number of respondents from China increased significantly, accounting for 3% of all respondents from 11% in the previous year. China and the United States became the two countries with the largest number of respondents to the survey.

In March 2023, Springer Nature's journals and books began to implement a unified data policy to make data sharing easier to promote transparency and repeatability. (End)
