Climate change has prompted the UN to encourage countries to grow more resilient crops – and it has therefore declared 2023 the International Year of Millet.
The idea comes from India, where the most millet is grown in the world, 12 million tonnes. But it is not even a tenth of the rice harvest and the goal is to increase production, because compared to rice and wheat, millet plants need irrigation or pesticides and are better able to cope with climate change.
In the past, it was common to grow millet in India and now the government is trying to get more farmers to return to the crop.
But where it now turns out that even millet has a hard time coping with increasingly extreme weather.
