Liverpool FC with team manager Jürgen Klopp thanks to the shooting help of Aston Villa: The club from Birmingham prevailed 1-0 (1-0) against the previous leader FC Arsenal. The Gunners, with national player Kai Havertz in the starting eleven, lost the top position to Klopp's team, which had previously won a hard-fought three points in the 2-1 (0-0) win at Crystal Palace. Liverpool now have 37 points, while Arsenal have 36 points. Villa have 35 points.
The Scotsman John McGinn (7th) scored the 1-0 for Villa on an assist from ex-Leverkusen player Leon Bailey. During the week, the third-placed team had already brought Manchester City to their knees with a 1-0 thrashing of treble winners. The supposed equaliser by Havertz (90+1) did not count because of a handball.
Liverpool had also remained unbeaten in the Premier League for the ninth game in a row. Harvey Elliott (90+2) scored the late winner for the team from Anfield. Former Mainz player Jean-Philippe Mateta (57', penalty) had converted a penalty kick he had caused himself to give Crystal the lead. Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah (76th) scored his 200th goal for the Reds to equalise, before the hosts had lost Jordan Ayew to a yellow card (75th). Liverpool immediately used the advantage to equalise.
Salah is the fifth Liverpool player to reach the 200-goal mark in all competitions for the Reds. Even more successful were Ian Rush (346), Roger Hunt (285), Gordon Hodgson (241) and Billy Liddell (228). "The most important thing was our win today, of course it's a great feeling. I'm very happy to reach this mark," Salah said.
Record champion Manchester United, Bayern Munich's opponent in the Champions League on Tuesday, meanwhile fell under the wheels at home against AFC Bournemouth 0:3 (0:1).
