Highlights: There are currently 300 wolves in central Sweden. There will be ten in the north and five in the south. The proposal must be submitted to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency by 1 March. The levels are used as a basis for the management of wolves in the country. For example, when deciding on protection and licensed hunting, the levels are taken into account. It is hoped that the proposal will lead to a reduction in the number of wolves living in southern Sweden, which is where the majority of the population is.

The County Administrative Boards propose that the minimum levels for wolves be lowered in central Sweden, which may lead to an increase in the wolf population in southern Sweden. P4 Halland was the first to report this.

The wolf is increasingly moving in southern Sweden. With the current minimum level, there must be at least 300 wolves in the country, of which 285 are in central Sweden. There will be ten in the north and five in the south.

The minimum levels should to a greater extent reflect what the inventory of wolves looks like in Sweden's management areas, says Sandra Wahlund, head of the wildlife unit at the County Administrative Board of Gävleborg.

"We propose a reduction to 215 wolves in central Sweden and the other 85 should be located in the southern management area.

The levels are used as a basis for the management of wolves. For example, when deciding on protection and licensed hunting.

The proposal must be submitted to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency no later than 1 March.
