For the first time ever, a Boeing 787 has landed in Antarctica, becoming the largest passenger plane ever to do just that. "This is very big, bigger than I thought actually in terms of the interest this has received," says Sven Lidström, operations manager at Troll Station.
Aviation enthusiasts will recognize the Boeing 787 as a little brother to the 777 model that is often used on long trips. It is a medium-sized plane with its capacity up to 68 meters. But in Antarctica, the Boeing 787 is the largest plane ever to land in the frozen landscape.
According to reports, the plane took off in Oslo on November 13 and then made a stopover in Cape Town before finally landing on the 3,000-meter frozen runway on November 15.
According to Sven Lidström, the landing brings great environmental benefits in terms of deliveries to Troll Station.
"Heavy deliveries have previously been sent by boat, so you had to plan the delivery a year in advance," he says.
