Highlights: The U.S. Senate is set to vote on a bill that would make it easier to deport illegal immigrants. The bill would be the first of its kind to be passed in the United States. It would also make it possible to deport people who have been convicted of drug offenses. The Senate is expected to vote by the end of the year on the bill, which would allow for the deportation of up to 10,000 people a year. The House of Representatives will vote later this year on whether to grant the bill.

Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M) is now responding to the Prison and Probation Service's concern that the Tidö Agreement's stricter criminal policy may worsen the already strained situation in the country's prisons and detention centers. "The reforms will be implemented," Strömmer said on SVT's Agenda.

If all of the Tidö Agreement's proposals for harsher punishments were to be fulfilled at the same time, the pressure on Sweden's prisons would be too high – this is alarmed by both the Prison and Probation Service and the courts.

"If you don't care at all about what we say about the need to relieve the pressure at the other end, then we risk ending up in a very difficult situation," said the Prison and Probation Service's Director General Martin Holmgren in SVT's 30 Minutes earlier this week.

The Minister of Justice understands the Authority's concerns, but insists that the reforms must be pursued.
