At least 20 happy dogs with their owners in tow were on site when the dog park in Piteå was inaugurated on Sunday.

Over the years, several Piteå residents have submitted citizen proposals for a dog park in the municipality and on Sunday, the sought-after exercise yard was finally opened at Norrstrand in Piteå.

The dog park was approved by the Culture and Leisure Committee and was estimated to cost the municipality SEK 525,000 plus an operating cost of approximately SEK 30,000 per year.

Controversial rules

The rules that apply to staying in the exercise yard with your dog have been discussed extensively on social media and the municipality has listed some basic points for what is okay or not.

– We can set rules, but in the end, it comes to the dog owner's responsibility to keep an eye on their dog, says Elisabeth Lindberg (S), chairman of the culture and leisure committee in Piteå municipality.
