Economists estimate that a shooting with two injured costs society SEK 75 million. It includes the cost to society of, among other things, healthcare, the police and the judicial system.
But there are also large hidden and indirect costs. This is suspected by several researchers at Uppsala University, among others, who will now investigate how shootings affect people living in vulnerable areas and the costs it entails.
Mattias Öhman, researcher in economics, shows a map of Uppsala. There, the researchers have compiled all shootings between 2014-2018. In Gottsunda, for example, 17 red stars are visible – one for each shooting during the period. Outside them are additional dots that are supposed to symbolize people who have been indirectly affected.
