The much-hyped TV series "The idol" is canceled after one season, reports American Deadline.


The HBO production, in which Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye plays cult-leading guru who puts his claws into the fragile pop star Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp), was widely publicized even before the first episode aired, partly as a result of drug-filled sex scenes.

"The Idol was one of HBO's most provocative original productions and we are delighted with the strong response the series has received from audiences. After a period of consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers, have decided not to move forward with the second season," a spokesperson for the streaming giant said in a statement.
