Rebels in Niger have appointed former Finance Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zein to the post of prime minister.

"The chairman of the National Council for the Defense of the Fatherland, the head of state, decides that Mr. Lamin Zain Ali Mahaman is appointed prime minister," RIA Novosti quoted the statement as saying.

ActuNiger notes that at the moment Lamine Zane is the representative of the African Development Bank in Chad.

On July 30, ECOWAS gave Niger a week to return the president to power, then it can apply all possible measures, including military ones.
