Hunter Biden, son of U.S. President Joe Biden and a recurring target of Republican opposition, has been charged with illegal possession of a weapon and filing and paying his tax returns late in 2017 and 2018, according to a court filing released Tuesday.

According to the filing by Delaware Attorney General David Weiss in federal court, Biden has agreed to a plea deal to plead guilty to two tax-related charges.

Under the plea agreement, Hunter Biden, 53, admits not having declared to the treasury the income he received in 2017 and 2018, and not having paid for them, in exchange for prosecutors recommending parole for him, which could avoid jail.

The settlement also includes what in U.S. judicial jargon is called "pretrial diversion" as it relates to the charge of unlawful possession of a firearm. This mechanism serves to avoid a traditional prosecution and move the accused to a community supervision program.

Hunter Biden, 53, has for years been the focus of relentless attacks by Trump and his Republican allies who have accused him of wrongdoing related to Ukraine and China, among other issues.

Biden has worked as a lobbyist, lawyer, investment banker and artist, and has publicly detailed his struggles against substance abuse. He was discharged from the U.S. Navy reserve in 2014 after testing positive for cocaine, sources said at the time.
