Heavy snow has broken the Old Tjikko fir that stands on Fulufjället in Älvdalen municipality. The tree is the world's oldest tree organism, 9500 years old. - It looks very worn now, says mountain guide Tommy Lönnebacke, who discovered the top break.

He was to guide a photographer to the well-known tree earlier this week when he discovered that the top of the old tree had snapped.

- About a meter is gone, says Tommy Lönnebacke.

"Will Survive"

This year's winter has been unusually hard in the mountains in northern Dalarna.

Large amounts of heavy snow have for a long time been frozen to the tree branches with lots of top breaks as a result.

- But Old Tjikko will survive.

It is the root system that is 9,500 years old and it has survived, but the tree itself looks completely different now, says Tommy Lönnebacke.
