Milan is the least safe city in Italy.
This was revealed by the study published by Il Sole 24 Ore which analyzed the data extracted from the joint database by the Department of Public Security of the Ministry of the Interior.
The black jersey goes to the Lombard capital once again this year, confirming itself as the territory with the most thefts detected per 100 thousand inhabitants, in particular in shops and parked cars.
The metropolitan city is also seventh for reports of sexual violence, second for public robberies and third for criminal associations.
"We found a predominance of street crimes, even aggressive ones, which take place along the commercial axes, in the nightlife areas or on the public transport network that welcomes 1.5 million passengers every day - explained to the newspaper Marco Granelli, councilor for Security of the Municipality of Milan - We asked for and obtained 255 policemen and carabinieri and we are hiring 500 local policemen: the first 108 will be on duty from November ".
It is then
the tourist flows that influence the trend of complaints
detected by the police forces during 2021 and which see in Rimina the second classified in the sad ranking: even here theft is the most reported type of crime, as in Milan .
In addition to Milan, the 107 provinces in the top ten
include Turin (3rd), Bologna (4th), Rome (5th), Florence (7th) and Naples (10th)
.
Comparing the 2021 data with those of 2019, before the pandemic, there is a generalized decrease in quantitative terms of offenses.
And the trend is confirmed in all metropolitan areas: Milan, for example, scored -11.8%, while Rome is -6.8%;
Florence, Venice and Bologna are the major cities with the most marked decline, equal to -24.6%, -17.8% and -15.3 percent.
A major crime depending on the territory
The geography of 2021 crimes then confirms a series of consolidated scenarios: Milan, the capital of thefts in general, in front of Rimini and Rome;
Barletta at the top of the car rankings;
Naples first for theft and theft of motorcycles, but also for smuggling
.
And again: Gorizia at the top of the ranking of scams and computer fraud;
Vibo Valentia first for threats
.
However, a series of innovations emerge, such as the primacy of La Spezia in drug-related offenses, including drug dealing, and that of Matera in terms of fire reports.
Enna replaces Caltanissetta at the top of the list of voluntary killings, and is followed by Aosta, while Biella and Ragusa wear the black jersey for, respectively, extortion and usury.
While almost all the provinces show a general decline in reported crimes compared to the pre-Covid period, there are about ten from which alarm signals emerge.
Piacenza and Isernia, for example, in 2021 both recorded an increase in crime compared to 2019
.
In Piacenza and the province, the crimes reported rose by 11.7%, reaching just under 10 thousand reports.
Among the negative records of the Emilia province, the one for home robberies and one for road killings stand out (2nd).
But the territory turns out to be among the worst in Italy also for sexual violence and sexual violence against children under 14 (11th).
Isernia, on the other hand, which is in the middle (49th) of the general classification of reported crimes in relation to the population, in 2021 recorded crimes up by 8.8% on 2019. Just like Piacenza, the Molise province weighed on the street killings, to which are added criminal associations and fires (2nd).
A crime that changes
Then there is the web chapter because if crimes are decreasing and some almost disappear (such as bank robberies), the purely IT ones are not.
The Sole 24 Ore survey highlights how online crime has doubled
(+ 100% computer crimes, with an average of 84 offenses reported per day in the first half)
and, with it, computer scams, which grew by 18% on 2019.
Online extortion is also on the rise
(+ 23% in the first half of 2022 compared to the same period in 2019).
"For companies or hospitals, attacks have become more and more frequent that paralyze the activity, in exchange for money", explained to the Milanese daily the prefect Vittorio Rizzi, deputy director general of the Public Security department.
Reports of
sexual violence
also increased : 2,798 episodes in the first half, compared to 2,254 reported in 2019 (+ 24%), with an increase of 14% also in those to the detriment of minors under 14.
“The trend reflects women's propensity to denounce, which has grown thanks to greater social sensitivity towards this type of violence.
The approval of the Red Code and the regulatory extension of the conducts that configure this type of crime also contributed, some for example in other countries are defined as acts of lust ”concluded the prefect.
