On June 6, 1937, the official opening of the world's first drifting polar station "North Pole - 1" took place. Four Soviet polar explorers spent 274 days on an ice floe floating in the Arctic, covering about 2 thousand km. Scientists have implemented an extensive program of unique scientific research. As a result of the expedition, the USSR established itself as a leader in the development of the Arctic, and its participants became Heroes of the Soviet Union, doctors of geographical sciences and received universal recognition.
