Media: New Caledonia voted against independence from France

Residents of New Caledonia, a French overseas territory located in the Pacific Ocean, according to preliminary data, voted against complete independence from the metropolis.


According to Le Parisien, opponents of independence won by a small margin in the referendum.

French President Emmanuel Macron is reportedly planning to deliver an address as soon as final results are known.

The first referendum on the independence of New Caledonia was held in 2018, then the opponents of independence also won.

Macron commented on this.

The next vote on this issue could be repeated in 2022.
