BMW Korea will begin recalling car fires on the 20th.

The recall is the largest in the history of recalling import cars in Korea, with a total of 102,317 diesel vehicles.

If there is no further fire with the recall process, the situation will be resolved, but if the problem recurs, the reliability of the recall itself may be questioned.

According to the industry on March 19, BMW Korea's recall is to replace EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) cooler and valve with defective products and clean (clean) the EGR pipe.

This is because the coolant leaks from the EGR cooler, accumulates deposits in the EGR pipe and the intake manifold, and the EGR valve malfunctions, causing high temperature exhaust gases to escape and the sediment to ignite.

The company has been working hard to supply parts with good quality, such as EGR parts flight by air at Germany head office, with the aim of completing the recall period, which usually takes one to two years.

Parts that have already been secured have been used for replacement in vehicles that have been identified as having a fire hazard during the emergency safety diagnostic process prior to the recall.

BMW Korea does not disclose the details of securing specific parts, but there are so many vehicles to recall that it is impossible to replace parts in bulk at the earliest possible time.

In fact, among the borrowers, there is a complaint that the recall is delayed due to the delayed number of weeks or months that were originally booked through the service center.

Unlike the company's policy that some borrowers will complete the yearly recall, it is reported that the service center has been informed that it is possible to make a recall reservation by next year.

BMW said that it will not change the start of the recall on the 20th, but it is different from the schedule of parts supply or service according to the engine type.

If the recall schedule is pushed back in a chain, the borrowers will be forced to borrow.

There is a concern that some of the borrowers can not be relieved unless the parts in question are replaced completely, as there is a case in which it is determined that there is no abnormality through the safety diagnosis.

Apart from the recall, BMW Korea has decided to continue operating the safety diagnostic service for the time being.

This is because there are still vehicles that have not received a safety diagnosis due to the fact that the service center is saturated or the customer is staying overseas.

According to BMW Korea, there are 89,500 vehicles that have passed safety diagnoses by midnight on August 18, 5,400 reserved vehicles, and 2,400 cars that have not yet been reserved.

An automobile industry official said, "Even if we start recalling, we need a certain period of experience in the field. Compared with the usual cases, BMW Korea's preparation period for recall is very short and there is a shortage of service center network. I think it is time for us to make a mistake so that we do not get any more fire. "
